Infection Prevention In The OR

Ā

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain one of the most significant complications in perioperative care, impacting patient outcomes, length of stay, and healthcare costs. This comprehensive session explores the multifactorial causes of SSIs and evidence-based strategies to prevent them before, during, and after surgery. Participants will review current CDC wound classifications, risk factors, and best practices in aseptic technique, skin and hair preparation, glycemic and temperature control, and environmental safety. Emphasis is placed on the perioperative nurse’s critical role in infection prevention, interprofessional collaboration, and post-surgical surveillance. By applying these principles, OR teams can enhance patient safety, reduce infection rates, and promote excellence in surgical care. Ā
